A different story....
I purchased this radio on Amazon and received it today. I am sorely disappointed. Many of the reviews I read online noted the radio's great AM/FM reception quality, which is the main reason I sprung for this model. However, to my surprise, even in the broadcast-rich region I live in, I received only 5 FM stations clearly. For fun I even checked a map to see where they came from, and they're all within 10-15 miles of my home. I cannot receive the NPR news station that has a transmitter 6 miles away. By comparison, I receive about 20 FM stations very very clearly on my car radio even when it's parked right outside my house where I've been trying the Sangean. To add insult to injury, the little radio that came inside of my Microsoft Zune MP3 player gets the same stations as the Sangean clearly, and without any antenna! Perhaps mine is faulty, but either way it's getting returned.

Excellent Small Radio
Great reception, FM is outstanding, selectivity of weak stations is enhanced by adjusting antenna, AM is excellent as well.
Hard to say if two small speakers is better than one larger one as in other Sangean products, but overall a great radio in a small package.

Excellent Sound and Reception
The Sangean PR-D5 is one of the best portable radios presently on the market. The sensitivity of both the AM and FM bands is extremely good - the best of any radio I've tried. A stereo/mono switch helps you to clarify FM frequencies. Five presets are available per band. The auxilliary function, which allows you to run an external source through the radio (such as a CD player), is a handy feature, and more or less necessary these days. The unit offers both radio and buzzer alarms, which are fairly easy to set. It can also be set to turn off after 120, 90, 60, 45, 30, or 15 minutes. The window display is well lit and indicates either the radio frequency, time, mode (AM, FM, or Aux.), or alarm time.

This Sangean Radio is a fairly simple machine. It takes only a brief review of the manual to understand how to operate each function. It has a sharp clean white appearance, and is fairly stable, although you do need to grab the body as you press the buttons.

The Sangean PR-D5 is a very impressive radio. I compared it side by side with the CCRadio Plus, and found the PR-D5 to have equal or better reception and sound quality. The CC has a slightly brighter timbre, while the PR is a bit richer. The PR also beats its predecessor, the Sonido Radio, in both categories.

Speaking of the Sonido, I would have liked the NOAA function to have been carried over. It seems senseless not to have done so.

My favorite feature of the PR-D5 is the stereo mode. I listen to a lot of classical music. In mono, such music loses some of its virtue. In stereo, it regains a rich and lively quality. I can't imagine why the stereo mode has been omitted from the portable radio market. It's a terrible omission. The PR thankfully restores this omission.

For both reception and sound quality I give this radio a five star rating. I'm thoroughly pleased with it, and have no outstanding complaints. The price makes it a bargain.

Impressive performance for the money
I don't live in a "fringe" area, but for some reason, my bathroom radio needs were hard to fill. An older analog dial radio seemed to get fair reception, but it was starting to have other problems so when I went to replace it, I tried a number of $40 to $100 portable radios from Target, Circuit City, etc. - all with digital tuners.

But their FM reception was horrible - almost anyplace in my house, but especially in the bathroom. So I started researching radios known for their reception, and came across the Sangean PR-D5. It didn't have a CD player, but I'd gladly trade that for decent reception.

I'm incredibly impressed, and very satisfied with its performance. It sounds pretty good, too, although bass and treble controls would have been expected at this price point. But the interface is clear and easy to use (contrary to some other reviews), the controls work smoothly, it's sized appropriately, and the clock and RDS are welcome additions.

Sonically, if you're music lover in search of high fidelity, I'm not sure this is for you. But if you like talk radio or need a radio with excellent reception for a relatively low price - I can't recommend this unit highly enough.

Great Radio - sound and reception
I bought this radio so that we could listen to some remote signals and be able to tune them in electronically. The radio works great. The sound is crystal clear and the tuning is very easy. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good radio to listen to both AM and FM.
