LG Display Made LCD TFT Display Modules On Two Sided Panel
LG Display came up with a reflective LCD panel that displays images on the front and back glass substrate sides; to be unveiled at SID 2008.

With the electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) reflective type display mode, the panel has no need for a backlight and gets a higher outdoor visibility. So the panel is aimed at using in mobile devices. For instance, the new LCD panel can function both as the main and sub displays on a mobile phone at the same time.
The ECB mode functions as a display method and works on the birefringence effect of liquid crystal cells. This method is used for the standard semi-transmissive and reflective LCD panels.
In order to display images on both sides, 2 major modifications were performed. First, the arrangement of a new reflective layer in the color filter substrate. If you view the images from the TFT array substrate side, you will see that the layer reflects incoming light. But from the side of the color filter, the reflection electrode reflects the light on the TFT array.

Another improvement concerns the structure of the TFT array. Two transistors were put in one pixel so that to show different images on LCD TFT display modules on panel’s both sides.
LG Display made two LCD TFT display module panels: 2.2- and 15-inch displays with the new structure. Both of them have a reflectivity of 20%. The 15-inch prototype performs a resolution of 2048 x 1536 with 46% of an aperture ratio. A sub-pixel arrangement with four colors it employs consists of R, G, B and white (W) colors in addition.
The 2.2-inch prototype boasts a 160 x 120 resolution and 43% of an aperture ratio. A stripe pattern arranges the RGB three colors.

Wait 2 More Years For OLPC XO-2
OLPC’s Global Country Workshop conference took place in Cambridge with OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte, whose duty was to announce the second gen of the OLPC XO laptop to be called the XO-2.

There are not many details about the hardware of XO-2, but it is revealed that the new system has 2 touch-sensitive displays. The XO-2 is going to be half the size smaller than the original machine and will possess a foldable e-book form factor. According to Negroponte, the next generation laptop would be a book.
The XO-2 features the dual indoor-and-sunlight displays, first introduced by Mary Lou Jepsen, former OLPC CTO. The design shows a right and left page in vertical format, a flat two-screen surface for tablet mode and a hinged laptop in horizontal format.
Small children will be able to operate simple keyboards, and older children will have the opportunity to switch between keyboards, which are customized for applications and for various languages.
The XO-2 will have the reduced power consumption of 1 watt as well.
By the end of the speech, Negroponte announced that the Give one, Get one program will allow consumers to provide a child with one laptop in the developing world and have a low-cost laptop for themselves. Also he promised that the XO-2 is scheduled to be released in 2010.
